by the desire for stuff. It’s a buzzword for “give me more, ever more—

Motivators and marketers are allies in chanting the mantra of “abundance thinking,” with books and workshops on how to get it. And how to fix what’s wrong with you if you can’t. But it’s a con—designed to direct your attention away from the true abundance you already have. The kind of treasure you can’t buy with you credit card.

Because what they offer, and what so many people accept without question, is a false promise. The more you have or can get your hands on, the more you are. The happier you’ll be.

Sorry, it doesn’t work that way. Acquiring ever more stuff can’t bring lasting or deep happiness. It’s merely a childish game. No matter how well you play it, the result isn’t satisfying. The next, new desire forever presents itself.

Abundance has a sister named Gratitude. When the two get together the heart is full. The urge to acquire more is stilled temporarily. That feeling has absolutely nothing to do with how many possessions one has. Who cares? Whatever it happens to be is more than enough.

That’s what true abundance is—pressed down and overflowing. Expanding beyond limits. That’s what your heart seeks—rather than another “must have” to add to the pile.

See through the diminished promises touted by the “abundance priests.” Consider—which is your birthright? And which represents nothing more than a mess of pottage?
